Starlust achieved a remarkable win in the Prevagen Breeders Cup Turf Sprint at Del Mar, thanks to the impressive partnership of trainer Ralph Beckett and jockey Rossa Ryan. The race initially seemed to favor the favorite, Cogburn, who surged ahead under Irad Ortiz Jr. However, as the race progressed, his early speed affected his stamina, allowing challengers to catch up. South African competitor Isivunguvungu led the charge, but Ryan made a powerful move with Starlust, clinching the victory over Motorious and AG Bullet.
There was some tension as Isivunguvungu’s jockey, Manny Franco, lodged an objection regarding interference by the winner, but stewards quickly confirmed the result. Beckett praised Ryan’s outstanding performance and expressed pride in Starlust, noting the horse’s resilience throughout the year.
In another highlight, Rebels Romance excelled in the Longines Breeders Cup Turf, marking his second victory in this event. With William Buick riding, he made a critical move to challenge the leading horse. Although Japanese horse Rousham Park made a late charge, Rebels Romance held on to win.
Tragedy struck the day with the death of Brian Meehan’s horse Jayarebe after crossing the finish line, suspected to be due to a cardiac event. Meanwhile, Emily Upjohn, trained by John Gosden, underperformed, leading to her retirement announcement.
In the Filly And Mare Turf, Moira secured the win against a late-charging Cinderellas Dream, trained by Charlie Appleby, emphasizing the unpredictable nature of the competition.
