A trend of celebrity lookalike contests is currently intriguing the web. These competitions have been organized in different global cities lately. A recent one held at London’s Soho Square saw numerous Harry Styles lookalikes gather. Katrina Mirpuri, a journalist, initiated the event, which managed to attract more than a hundred viewers and twelve contestants who resemble the Grammy laureate singer. The champion bagged a cash prize of £50.
This Styles’ lookalike contest was arranged shortly after a similar event in Dublin, Ireland, where doppelgangers of Paul Mescal met. Their victorious contender took home three pints, £20 and pride.
The trend seems to have originated last month in New York City where people resembling actor Timothe Chalamet partook in a competition preceded by a giant crowd, including Chalamet himself, police attendance, and £50 rewards for every participant. Anthony Po, a YouTuber who organized the Chalamet lookalike contest shared with The Hollywood Reporter that his intention behind hosting such occasions includes hosting public stunts and performance arts.
In his words, he finds it amusing and believes a majority of creators nowadays just provide commentary rather than creating something. Hence, his team and he contemplate initiatives that would be both enjoyable and instigate conversation. Their endeavours seek to provide entertaining content free and memorable for viewers.
So, it will be interesting to see which celebrity is next in line for a lookalike contest.
