Hollywood’s iconic Cinespia transformed into a night to remember as fans gathered at the Hollywood Forever Cemetery on August 16 for a special outdoor screening of the 2001 comedy classic, Zoolander. The evening was elevated by unexpected appearances from the movie’s star and director, Ben Stiller, and actor Tramell Tillman.
Stiller’s ‘Zoolander’ Introduction
Before the screening, Cinespia’s founder, John Wyatt, took the stage to welcome the crowd. Shortly after the opening performances by DJ Daisy O’Dell and emcee Love Bailey, Wyatt surprised attendees by bringing out Ben Stiller, who appeared in character as Derek Zoolander. Greeted with applause and laughter, Stiller quipped in Derek’s charming yet oblivious fashion, jokingly announcing the “nine-year anniversary screening of Zoolander 2.” Correcting himself, he added, “What? Zoolander 1? Okay, cool. I hope you really enjoy it and don’t get freaked out by all those creepy, gross, dead people underneath you.”
Homage to ‘Severance’
As the audience settled, music suddenly played from the opposite side of the stage. To everyone’s surprise, Tramell Tillman appeared, leading the USC marching band in a playful nod to Severance, a recent hit series starring Tillman and executive produced by Stiller. This homage recreated the surreal marching band scene from the show’s season 2 finale.
Addressing the audience, Stiller acknowledged Tillman’s entrance but humorously suggested, “This is kind of more like a ‘Zoolander’ thing than a ‘Severance’ thing. So maybe you could, I don’t know, play like a Zoolandery type of song?” Without hesitation, Tillman directed the band into a brass rendition of “Relax” by Powerman 5000, a track prominently featured in Zoolander.
An Unforgettable Evening
The band left the stage to roaring applause, perfectly setting the mood for the feature presentation. This seamless blend of nostalgia for Zoolander and a creative nod to Severance thrilled fans, cementing the event as one of Cinespia’s most memorable screenings.
The night served as a testament to Ben Stiller’s lasting impact in both comedy and television, while also showcasing Tillman’s rising stardom. For attendees, it was a unique experience blending beloved cinematic moments and fresh pop-culture references—all under the stars in a one-of-a-kind setting.
