A 34-year-old father tragically passed away after reportedly being bitten by a venomous spider he had recently purchased online. The incident, which occurred in Merseyside, has left his family devastated as they remember his life and warn about the potential dangers of exotic pet ownership.
Obsessed with Spiders After Conquering Fear of Insects
Mark Anthony Kirby, from Prescot, began collecting venomous spiders just weeks before his untimely death. His ex-partner of 16 years, Kayleigh Gill, revealed that despite his initial fear of insects, he grew fascinated by spiders. He had purchased five of them online, reportedly as a way to keep himself company after living alone.
Rapid Decline in Health Following Spider Bite
While spending time with Kayleigh, her new partner, and her sister during a trip to Scotland, Mark complained about feeling unwell but showed no signs of severe illness. Days later, he began experiencing flu-like symptoms, including a fluctuating temperature and muscle aches. On August 2, Mark informed his sister Kath that he was struggling to breathe. She rushed to his flat and immediately called emergency services, but paramedics were unable to save his life.
Though a post-mortem examination has yet to confirm the exact cause of death, Kayleigh believes the symptoms were consistent with a venomous spider bite. She shared with The Liverpool Echo that Mark admitted to being bitten but had not sought medical attention despite her urging.
Family Speaks Out on Tragic Loss
Paying tribute to Mark, Kayleigh described him as a doting father to their two children, an 18-year-old son Nathan-Mark and a 17-year-old daughter Kimmy-Louise. “He was funny, caring, outgoing, and always the life of the party,” she said. Although the couple had separated, they reportedly remained the best of friends, always prioritizing their children.
Call for Stricter Regulations on Exotic Pets
Kayleigh has called for tighter regulations on the ownership and sale of exotic species, stating that licenses should be mandatory to prevent similar tragedies. Exotic pets like venomous spiders can pose significant risks, especially without proper education and care resources. The incident serves as a somber reminder of the responsibilities involved with owning such animals.
As investigations continue, Mark’s family and friends are left mourning the loss of a beloved father, friend, and personality who will be sorely missed.
