A recently surfaced video allegedly shows Hamtramck, Michigan City Council member Abu Musa engaging in suspicious ballot-handling activities in a swing state critical to Donald Trump’s 2024 election victory. The footage, which has been authenticated by Michigan State Police, highlights Musa sitting in the passenger seat of a vehicle while handing bundles of absentee ballots to a driver, who then deposits multiple stacks into a ballot drop box.
Alleged Ballot Box Stuffing Raises Concerns
The incident reportedly occurred on August 1, just days before Hamtramck’s primary election on August 5, where Musa secured victory with over 1,129 votes. Of those, a striking 843 votes were absentee ballots, raising eyebrows given that his election-day votes ranked only fifth among the candidates. The new video emerges amidst an ongoing investigation into council members and their potential involvement in election forgery cases.
This development follows the recent charges filed against two of Musa’s city council colleagues, Muhtasin Sadman and Mohammed Hassan, for allegedly forging ballots in the city’s 2023 election. Attorney General Dana Nessel documented evidence suggesting that the accused received unvoted absentee ballots, completed them for specific candidates, and submitted them unlawfully.
Political Drama in Hamtramck
The election forgery scandal has placed Hamtramck, a city of roughly 28,000 residents and a 70% Muslim population, under intense scrutiny. In 2022, the city became the first in the U.S. to be governed by an all-Muslim council. Given the community’s demographics, the allegations carry political and cultural implications.
Adding to the controversy, Attorney General Nessel recently recused herself from the investigation, citing potential bias concerns due to her previous criticisms of certain council policies and prosecutions of pro-Palestinian protestors. Critics have taken issue with her past decisions, accusing them of potential prejudice against Arab and Muslim communities. With five defendants in this case being of Arab descent, her departure from the case aimed to ensure impartiality.
2024 Election Backdrop
The spotlight on Hamtramck also ties into Michigan’s political landscape. Former President Donald Trump narrowly won the state in the 2024 election with 49.7% of the vote against Kamala Harris, solidifying Michigan’s status as a critical battleground in U.S. politics. Notably, Hamtramck Mayor Amer Ghalib, a vocal Trump supporter, endorsed Trump and was later nominated as Ambassador to Kuwait.
The ongoing investigations and political dynamics in Hamtramck underscore the broader challenges of ensuring election integrity and balancing political accountability. Musa has yet to publicly address the allegations, while Detroit’s Local 4 News continues to report developments surrounding the case.
