A father was left with severe injuries after a brutal home invasion in Kew East, one of Melbourne’s most affluent suburbs. Early on Sunday morning, five masked intruders, one armed with a machete, stormed the family’s Oxford Street home, violently attacking the residents and leaving a trail of devastation.
Masked Intruders Strike at 4 AM
The terrifying ordeal occurred just after 4 AM when the 39-year-old father and his wife were awakened by the invaders. The attackers separated the couple and targeted the father, who fought back to protect his family. Tragically, he was stabbed multiple times in the head, face, and arms during the encounter.
Victoria Police reported that the grandparents, aged 69 and 70, were also injured as they attempted to assist. Despite their bravery, both were taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Miraculously, the couple’s two toddlers, aged two and three, were unharmed throughout the incident.
Shocking Violence in a Family’s Safe Haven
The mother was forced into a bedroom with her terrified children while her husband endured the brutal assault. As the intruders ransacked the property, they issued chilling threats, warning the mother not to leave the room.
The father was later rushed to the hospital with serious injuries, including a fractured left arm and facial wounds that will require surgery. The incident has left the community shocked and emphasized the vulnerability homeowners can face, even in seemingly secure neighborhoods.
Car Theft and Arrests
Four of the perpetrators fled the scene in the family’s luxury BMW, while another escaped in their original vehicle. Authorities later recovered the stolen car, abandoned on Christie Street in Deer Park. Police efforts led to the arrest of three suspects nearby on Hamilton Street, including a 24-year-old man and two teenagers, aged 16 and 17.
The arrested individuals now face numerous charges, including aggravated home invasion, intentionally causing serious injury, and false imprisonment. Two suspects remain at large as the investigation continues.
Community Outrage and Police Response
Boroondara Detective Sergeant Leanne Trussler expressed her shock at the brazen attack, stating, “This is awful—a family with young children and grandparents sleeping in their home should never have to experience this. Your home is supposed to be your safe haven.”
As authorities work to bring the remaining suspects to justice, the community is rallying around the victims, hoping to restore a sense of safety to a neighborhood shaken by the traumatic events.
