Tragedy struck Sydney’s inner west as one person lost their life and another suffered critical injuries after a shocking shooting outside a bustling gastropub during Sunday’s dinner rush.
The incident occurred outside The Harold, a historic pub located in Forest Lodge on Ross Street, at approximately 6:35 pm. According to a statement from New South Wales (NSW) Police, ‘two individuals were shot multiple times by unknown assailants who later fled the scene in a vehicle.’
Manhunt for the Suspects Continues
Police have launched a major manhunt for the perpetrators, who remained at large on Monday. Emergency medical teams arrived swiftly at the scene, performing CPR on one of the victims, a man who tragically succumbed to his injuries on-site. Another man, also critically injured, was rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment.
Eyewitness accounts painted a harrowing picture of the chaos that unfolded. A man was reportedly seen lying on the corner of Ross Street, bleeding, while police cordoned off Wigram Road. One witness claimed to overhear another man on a phone franticly shouting, ‘He’s my best friend.’
Fear and Panic Amidst the Gunfire
The Harold was filled with patrons at the time of the shooting. Staff acted quickly, locking entrances and advising diners to take cover under tables as dozens of shots rang out. Several bullets struck a car parked outside the pub. The gastropub, which first opened its doors in 1880, was evacuated as soon as authorities deemed it safe.
Local residents were directed to stay indoors while police collected statements. A crime scene was immediately established, and forensics teams are now meticulously combing the area for evidence.
Homicide Squad Joins the Investigation
Detectives from Leichhardt have taken charge of the investigation, with support from State Crime Command’s Homicide Squad. Police have not yet revealed the motive behind the shooting or identified the suspects involved.
The shocking event has left the community shaken as the investigation continues. Authorities are urging anyone with information about the incident to come forward to assist in the case.
