In heartbreaking news, two young lives have been lost in separate river-related incidents over the weekend in Cornwall and North Yorkshire.
11-Year-Old Girl Dies in Cornwall Incident
An 11-year-old girl from South Devon tragically passed away after an incident at the Lynher River near Wacker Quay in Cornwall. Emergency services were alerted to the beauty spot at approximately 6 PM on Saturday, following reports of a person in the water.
Despite being recovered from the water and receiving emergency treatment, the young girl was pronounced dead at the scene. A spokesperson for Devon and Cornwall Police confirmed that her next of kin had been informed and are being supported by specialist officers. The death is not being treated as suspicious, and a file will be prepared for the coroner.
12-Year-Old Boy’s Body Found in North Yorkshire
Meanwhile, in a separate tragic event, North Yorkshire Police confirmed the discovery of a body in the River Swale in Richmond on Saturday night during the search for a missing 12-year-old boy. Initial reports suggested the boy had entered the river around 5 PM the same day.
The body was recovered at 10:45 PM and, while yet to be identified, the boy’s family has been informed and is receiving support from specially-trained officers. Similar to the Cornwall incident, the death is not being treated as suspicious.
These devastating incidents highlight the ongoing risks associated with water-related activities, even in serene beauty spots, and serve as a reminder for enhanced water safety awareness.
Community and Police Support
Both families are being supported by specialist teams from local law enforcement. Authorities have reiterated the importance of water safety, especially for children, and are urging the public to remain vigilant in and around bodies of water.
