Renowned restaurateur and reality TV star Zach Erdem has filed a $5 million lawsuit against the village of Greenport and its mayor, Kevin Stuessi, alleging that his Mediterranean restaurant, ZErdem, was wrongfully shut down during its opening season. Erdem, also known for his successful reality TV series on HBO Max, Serving the Hamptons, claims village officials subjected him to harassment and discrimination by issuing ‘bogus’ code violations.
The Incident That Sparked the Lawsuit
In June 2023, approximately 11 Greenport officials, allegedly led by Mayor Stuessi, stormed into ZErdem on a busy Saturday night demanding the restaurant close immediately. Erdem was accused of operating an unpermitted hookah lounge, serving alcohol without a license, and excessive noise complaints regarding outdoor music. However, the Turkish-born entrepreneur rebuked these claims as ‘baseless’ and discriminatory, stating he was denied advance notice of any violations.
In his lawsuit, filed in the Eastern District of New York in June 2025, Erdem argued that the incident not only disrupted business operations but also caused reputational damage, costing him millions of dollars.
A Turbulent Legal Battle
Zealous to clear his name, Erdem fought back against allegations involving unlicensed liquor sales and code breaches. A judge dismissed the village’s initial lawsuit in July 2024, enabling Erdem to secure his liquor license the following month. Nevertheless, Erdem reports that the prolonged battle hindered ZErdem’s potential, with limitations on serving alcohol impairing profit margins until summer 2024.
“I have always operated legally and respectfully. For them to shut me down over false accusations is nothing short of targeting,” Erdem said in an interview.
Celebrity Chef and Entrepreneurial Success
Zach Erdem is a familiar name in Long Island’s upscale dining scene. Best known as the owner of 75 Main, an iconic Southampton hotspot that has welcomed high-profile clientele such as the Kardashians, Serena Williams, and President Joe Biden, Erdem is determined to expand his legacy into Greenport—a less commercialized but equally fashionable alternative to the Hamptons.
Aside from running seven successful ventures, including restaurants, hotels, and a nightclub, Erdem has built a reputation for excellence and attention to detail. With ZErdem now operating at full capacity following its liquor licensing, Erdem seeks to put the legal drama behind him and focus on delivering an elevated Mediterranean dining experience to the Greenport community.
How the Lawsuit May Influence Local Businesses
The allegations against Greenport’s leadership sparked further controversy following a related lawsuit from former code enforcement officer Bernardo Bolanos. Bolanos claimed he was wrongfully terminated after being directed by Mayor Stuessi to target Erdem while being instructed to turn a blind eye to other businesses’ violations. These revelations have cast doubt on the village’s governance and transparency.
For local entrepreneurs and restaurateurs eyeing Greenport as their next venture destination, Erdem’s case highlights the risks of potential biases in small-town decision-making processes. This could encourage future business owners to look closely at local regulations and community dynamics before investing.
