Young Conservatives Support AI-Led Policy Decisions
A recent survey conducted by the Heartland Institute and Rasmussen Reports has revealed surprising findings: young conservatives, aged 18-39, are more open than their liberal counterparts to allowing artificial intelligence (AI) to take control over major government functions. These respondents expressed a willingness to see AI involved in public policy decisions, constitutional rights, and even military command, with the goal of reducing casualties from wars. This trend is a striking departure from prior conservative hesitancies regarding AI, often citing political bias in AI systems.
The Poll Results Reveal an Interesting Ideological Divide
The survey, conducted among 1,496 likely voters between October 31 and November 2, found self-identified conservative participants to be especially supportive of AI-led governance. Donald Kendal, director of the Glenn C. Haskins Emerging Issues Center at the Heartland Institute, admitted he was surprised by these results. “If you go into the cross tabs, conservatives were consistently more likely to support these bold proposals,” Kendal shared.
Interestingly, Kendal linked this surprising trend to widespread public disillusionment with government institutions. As reported in an October 2025 Gallup poll, Congress’s approval rating stands at a mere 15%. Kendal speculated that this dissatisfaction might drive younger conservatives to prefer AI as a solution that seemingly operates without bias or error—though, as he reminded readers, this is a misconception.
AI Bias: A Growing Concern
Despite increased enthusiasm for AI in governance, concerns about political and ethical biases within AI systems remain valid. Multiple studies have demonstrated partisan inclinations in popular AI platforms. For example, a 2024 American Enterprise Institute review of GPT-4 and similar models found that these systems often skew left in their framing of issues. Similarly, think tanks like the Manhattan Institute have analyzed bias patterns in public AI systems, calling into question their fairness and objectivity.
The Heartland study also indicated that more than one-third of young voters supported placing AI in command of the world’s largest militaries. On this topic, Kendal noted, “There’s a perception that if AI can reduce war casualties, then it’s a worthwhile trade-off.” However, he stressed the importance of recognizing that AI is not free from passive or active biases.
Understanding Society’s Growing Reliance on AI
As more societal functions lean on AI-driven tools, Kendal emphasized the risks of overestimating their impartiality. “We rely on these systems at our own peril if we use them blindly,” he remarked. People may increasingly see AI as an objective arbiter of truth, but it’s critical to acknowledge the human influence behind the development of these technologies.
