Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) is a progressing lung disorder that impedes airflow, causing difficulty in breathing. The annual World COPD Day, initiated by the Global Initiative for Chronic Obstructive Lung Disease (GOLD), is designed to raise awareness, enhance prevention strategies, and promote better disease management.
Dr. Neetu Jain, a senior consultant with PSRI Hospital, drew attention to the escalating pollution in Delhi and its impacts on COPD patients. The persistent poor air quality, reflected by an AQI over 400, has seen a surge in patients suffering from pollution-related symptoms, regardless of their prior lung health status. Patients have been reporting coughs, breathlessness, wheezing, and some cases of severe pneumonia were noted.
This year’s World COPD Day theme, ‘Know Your Lung Function’, encourages spirometry as a chief tool for early detection and effective management of COPD. Lifestyle modifications can significantly improve lung health among those affected by COPD. Here are 10 recommendations:
- Quit smoking as it’s the primary cause of COPD.
- Enroll in a pulmonary rehabilitation program that combines exercise, education, and support.
- Regularly practice breathing exercises.
- Avoid environmental irritants and maintain an air purifier.
- Engage in regular low-impact exercises.
- Eat a healthy, anti-inflammatory diet.
- Manage stress and anxiety through relaxation techniques.
- Stay up-to-date with vaccinations against respiratory infections.
- Ensure proper sleep to aid body repair.
- Monitor symptoms regularly and manage with prescribed medication routines.
Making these changes can greatly help improve lung health and overall quality of life in COPD patients.
