WhatsApp is reportedly testing a new feature for Android users that enables real-time voice conversations with Meta AI. The feature, now available to select beta testers, allows users to initiate voice chat directly or switch to it within the chatbot’s interface. The real-time voice chat feature also offers continuity, letting users converse with AI while WhatsApp runs in the background.
According to WhatsApp feature tracker WABetaInfo, the instant messaging platform is testing Meta AI’s voice chat mode with beta testers. This feature made its debut in the latest WhatsApp beta for Android 2.25.21.21 update, as mentioned in a previous March report.
Users can engage in two-way voice conversations with Meta AI by tapping the waveform icon in the chat interface or activating voice mode in Settings. The voice chat feature is disabled by default and is functional only in the chat tab.
When on the Call tab, the Meta AI icon switches to the waveform icon, enabling users to start a voice conversation with the chatbot seamlessly, synchronizing with the tab’s functionality.
In the voice chat mode, users will find suggested topics at the center of the chat interface to initiate conversations. A collapse icon at the top left allows users to minimize the chat, letting them navigate to other apps while keeping the conversation active.
Ending a voice conversation on WhatsApp offers various options such as tapping the X button or typing a message to switch to text-mode. Users can check the call status through notifications or the Android microphone alert.
