The University of North Carolina (UNC) basketball team put an end to their three-match losing streak with a significant win over Georgia Tech in their season opener of the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC). The match took place in the Smith Center on Saturday afternoon and was the worst start for the Tar Heels, currently ranked 20th, since the 2001-02 season. Despite a shaky start, UNC’s coach Hubert Davis managed to improve their ACC openers record to 2-1.
Georgia Tech has struggled in recent matches at the Smith Center, losing 14 of the last 16. Their team boasted four players with double-figure averages including Lance Terry, Javian McCollum, Baye Ndongo, and Naithan George. For UNC, fifth-year guard RJ Davis, with an impressive average of 18.4 points per game, scored 28 points against the Yellow Jackets.
The final score was 68-65 in favor of UNC. Notably, all of UNC’s points in the first half were made by four players, all of whom were guards. And in a lineup change, VenAllen Lubin replaced Jalen Washington. Unfortunately, Ty Claude could not participate due to an injury.
Georgia Tech had its own injury problems with two starters Javian McCollum and Kowacie Reeves Jr missing due to injuries. Uncertainty still surrounds UNCs starting lineup for future matches. The UNC vs. Georgia Tech match was broadcast across multiple channels including FUBO and ESPN.
