Speaking to CNN, Witkoff revealed that during the recent summit in Alaska, an agreement was reached to offer Ukraine ‘Article 5-like’ assurances, invoking NATO’s principle of collective defense. While Ukraine’s NATO membership remains a sensitive topic for Russia, this arrangement could serve as an alternative path to ensure Ukraine’s security, provided it meets Kyiv’s expectations.
Zelensky Welcomes ‘Historic’ Offer Ahead of Key Discussions
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky described the US security guarantee offer as ‘historic’ ahead of critical talks involving US leaders, European allies, and himself in Washington, D.C. Zelensky emphasized that any agreement must be practical, encompassing robust protection on land, at sea, and in the air, with Europe’s active participation.
Further collaborative commitments were made following the Sunday meeting of the ‘coalition of the willing’—a defensive alliance including the UK, Germany, and France, focused on securing lasting peace in Ukraine. Downing Street confirmed that leaders praised former US President Donald Trump’s ‘commitment’ to the initiative. Plans to deploy reassurance forces post-conflict and bolster Ukraine’s military infrastructure were also brought to the forefront.

Despite growing international efforts to broker peace, significant complexities remain. Reports suggest that Russian President Vladimir Putin, during the Alaska talks, presented Trump with a proposal that involved Ukraine relinquishing control of the Donetsk region in return for halting military advances in Zaporizhzhia and Kherson.
