Emma Niblett, 36, and her husband Dan, 40, felt stuck in a monotonous routine in the UK, longing for more enriching family experiences. To break this cycle, they decided to rent out their home and embark on a journey to Bali in August 2024. For the past three months, they and their two sons, Noah, 8, and Isaac, 5, have been participating in a pop-up school, where the boys have learned about local culture and citizenship.
The family has also traveled to Sydney, Australia, and explored various locations in Bali, with plans to visit New Zealand and Japan this Christmas. They intend to continue world schooling on the road, utilizing different pop-up schools as they journey through Vietnam and Borneo.
Emma and Dan are working remotely to support their travels, finding that their lifestyle in Bali is significantly more affordable. Emma, a technology head from Leeds, noted their expenses are about 20% of what they were in the UK. They now enjoy inexpensive meals, like dinner at local markets for just $1 per person, and have more quality family time without the burden of chores and shopping that consumed their lives back home. They foresee a year of travel, but may extend their adventure if their sons remain happy.
