A Close Call: Shark Attack at Cabarita Beach Leaves Surfer Unscathed
In a hair-raising encounter on Cabarita Beach in northern New South Wales, surfer Brad Ross narrowly escaped a shark attack that could have been fatal. The incident, which occurred shortly before 8 am on Monday, left onlookers in shock, especially since a similar attack had happened just six weeks earlier involving a 16-year-old boy.
Witnesses reported seeing a massive four-meter great white shark in the water near the beach after the attack. Miraculously, Ross emerged from the water without injuries, though his surfboard was not as fortunate. Images shared online displayed a surfboard with a large bite mark, the force of which was enough to split the board in half.
Shark Drones Deployed for Public Safety
Following the attack, Surf Lifesaving NSW swiftly deployed drones to the area to monitor for the shark and ensure the safety of beachgoers. Cabarita Beach was temporarily closed as a precautionary measure to prevent further incidents.
The Tweed Shire Council issued a statement confirming the closure: “We’ve been advised by Surf Life Saving NSW that Cabarita Beach at Norries Headland is currently closed due to a shark bite incident earlier this morning. No one was injured during the incident. We will provide more information as it comes to hand.”
Celebrity Support: Kelly Slater Weighs In
World-renowned surfer Kelly Slater shared his thoughts on Ross’ frightening encounter. Commenting on social media, Slater wrote, “Great example of why I fear open ocean swimming so much. Surfboards have saved quite a few surfers with that tiny barrier.” His remark shed light on the importance of surfboards as a form of minimal protection during shark encounters.
Other locals chimed in on Instagram, sharing their shock and relief over the outcome. “A bit of drama on the beach after I filmed the beautiful sunrise. Another shark attack!” one user wrote. Another joked, “Poor little shark thought he was getting a tasty treat, ends up with a mouth full of fiberglass splinters.”
Prepare for Ocean Adventures Safely
While incidents like this are rare, they highlight the importance of safety measures for those who frequent the ocean. Beachgoers are encouraged to swim and surf in protected areas and always heed safety warnings from local authorities. Additionally, using products like the Sharkbanz Shark Deterrent Band may provide added peace of mind. This device uses magnetic technology designed to reduce the risk of shark encounters.
