Surfer Escapes Shark Attack Unscathed at Cabarita Beach
A dramatic shark encounter unfolded at Cabarita Beach, located roughly 35km north of Byron Bay, Australia, as a surfer experienced a harrowing near-miss. The shark bit a sizeable chunk out of the surfer’s board but, fortunately, left the rider uninjured.
Shark Attack Forces Beach Closure
The incident, which occurred just after 7:30 am on Monday, led the Tweed Shire council to close the beach temporarily. Videos captured from a beach cam revealed a commotion in the water as the attack unfolded. Photos shared online showed the surfer’s board with a large, bite-shaped mark and fractured in half.
In a statement on their Facebook page, the council assured locals, stating, “Fortunately, the bite missed the rider.” The lifeguards, in cooperation with Surf Life Saving New South Wales (SLSNSW), worked swiftly to close the beach and install warning signs, advising the public to stay out of the water. Further safety measures, including deploying drones to monitor the area, were also initiated.
Kelly Slater Reacts to the “Incredible” Escape
World-renowned surfing legend Kelly Slater reacted to the incident on Instagram, expressing his astonishment at the miraculous escape. “Incredible he’s ok,” Slater commented, underscoring the potential dangers of open ocean swimming. “Surfboards have saved quite a few surfers with that tiny barrier.” The eleven-time world surf champion has long advocated for safety precautions in surfing, further highlighting the risks involved in the sport.

This isn’t the first shark-related incident at Cabarita Beach. Less than two months ago, a young boy was bitten by a shark in the same location.
