Breaking Tradition: Steele Quinnell’s Unique Journey
In the heart of Cardiff Bay, during a brief interlude from his role as a personal trainer, Steele Quinnell reflects on how his life diverges from his family’s illustrious rugby legacy. With a lineage filled with towering figures like his grandfather Derek and father Scott, Steele has carved a different path as the drag queen Heidi Heights.
A Supportive Family Amidst High Expectations
Despite being born into a rugby family, Steele expresses that there was never direct pressure to follow in his relatives’ footsteps. Instead, after a short-lived attempt at rugby, he decided to pursue his passion for the arts instead. “My dad was fine with me not pursuing rugby. He always encouraged me to follow my heart, reminding me that the sport can be physically grueling,” Steele notes.
An Unexpected Path to Drag Performance
Steele’s journey into drag began unexpectedly when he auditioned for a role in the musical Kinky Boots. To his surprise, he was suggested to portray the drag queen and found joy in the vibrant world of wigs and performances. “I never saw drag in my future, but once I embraced it, the opportunities began pouring in,” he recalls.
Finding Inspiration in Music and Performance
Growing up, Steele immersed himself in music, mastering the saxophone, guitar, and piano, while also performing in local productions. “I always feel that my training in music has contributed to my performances as Heidi Heights. I’m less about the dance and lip-syncing and more about engaging with my audience,” he explains.
Heidi Heights: A Playful Persona
Embracing a fun, campy persona, Steele decided on the name Heidi Heights, a nod to his tall stature of 6ft 6in. “It’s about owning who you are. I want my performances to resonate with joy and laughter,” he shares. Audience interaction is a significant aspect of his act, drawing from the humor he learned from his father.
Balancing Dreams: A Dual Passion for Drag and Psychology
While Steele enjoys his newfound fame as Heidi Heights, he also harbors ambitions of furthering his education in psychology, potentially pursuing a PhD in the field. “I envision a future where I blend my passion for mental health with performance art,” he reflects.
The Future of Heidi Heights: Touring with Family
As Heidi Heights gains popularity, Steele is open to exploring a comedic dynamic with his father. “A double act could be in our future; he has the gift of gab, and I can provide the singing,” he quips. With such strong familial support, Steele Quinnell continues to inspire others to embrace their authentic selves, regardless of expectations.
