Starlust claimed a spectacular victory in the Prevagen Breeders Cup Turf Sprint at Del Mar, thanks to the winning duo of trainer Ralph Beckett and jockey Rossa Ryan. Although the favorite, Cogburn, initially seemed poised for success, fatigue set in as challengers emerged. South African contender Isivunguvungu led the pursuit, but Ryan executed a daring move, getting Starlust ahead in a nail-biting finish against Motorious and AG Bullet. An objection from Isivunguvungu’s jockey was quickly resolved in Starlust’s favor.
Beckett praised Ryan’s exceptional ride and expressed pride in Starlust’s accomplishments, highlighting the horse’s resilience throughout the season. Meanwhile, Rebels Romance, trained by Charlie Appleby and ridden by William Buick, won the Longines Breeders Cup Turf for the second time. Buick strategically positioned his mount close to the leader and surged ahead when it counted, holding off Japanese challenger Rousham Park at the line.
Tragically, the event was marred by the death of Brian Meehan’s Jayarebe, who collapsed after the race due to what preliminary reports indicated as a cardiac event. Appleby acknowledged Rebels Romance’s global reputation and praised his performance, while John Gosden confirmed Emily Upjohn would retire post-race.
Lastly, Kevin Attard’s Moira prevailed in the Filly and Mare Turf, edging out Cinderellas Dream as Buick lamented missed racing room early on.
