Acclaimed author Sally Rooney has stated her commitment to backing Palestine Action, despite the group being designated as a terrorist organization in the UK. Rooney, known for bestsellers like Normal People and Intermezzo, vowed to use her influence and earnings in supporting Palestine Action’s advocacy against genocide.
In an opinion piece for the Irish Times, she boldly declared her stance, indicating her willingness to be labeled a supporter of terrorism under UK law. This announcement follows Home Secretary Yvette Cooper’s defense of the UK government’s decision to classify Palestine Action as more than just a regular protest group.
Founded as a pro-Palestinian direct action organization, Palestine Action was officially proscribed in July as a terrorist group. Especially active in targeting arms companies amid the ongoing conflict in Gaza, the group has faced significant legal repercussions.
Rooney’s unwavering support for Palestine Action was further exemplified by her decision to channel the proceeds from her literary works, like the renowned Normal People and Conversations with Friends, towards the cause.
The government’s ban on Palestine Action led to over 700 arrests, with more than 500 individuals detained during a recent demonstration in London. While the widely publicized incident at RAF Brize Norton garnered attention, Home Secretary Cooper highlighted additional lesser-known acts attributed to the group.
According to Cooper, Palestine Action’s activities extend beyond mere protest, evidenced by their manual detailing tactics for selecting targets and avoiding law enforcement. The UK government views these actions as a direct threat, emphasizing the seriousness of the situation.
Notably, Rooney pointed out the erosion of civil liberties in the UK as a consequence of governmental decisions favoring diplomatic relations with Israel. She warned of far-reaching implications on cultural and intellectual freedom within the nation.
