The U.S. actors’ union, SAGAFTRA, has established an agreement with the AI service Ethovox to safeguard performers’ rights as part of its ongoing efforts to ensure fair compensation in the age of artificial intelligence. Ethovox provides a fully authenticated foundational AI model for voice, which facilitates the creation of digital replicas. This partnership comes as SAGAFTRA seeks to protect its members, particularly amid an ongoing strike by video game performers regarding AI use in game development.
Duncan Crabtree-Ireland, SAGAFTRA’s chief negotiator, emphasized that increased contractual protections are essential for voice actors in an AI-driven landscape. He stated that recognizing AI companies that adhere to union guidelines is crucial. While some performers may choose not to collaborate with AI companies, it’s vital that those who do are guaranteed informed consent and equitable compensation. Without these safeguards, the integration of AI could lead to exploitation.
Ethovox, co-founded by BAFTA award-winning actor Cissy Jones, positions itself as a voice AI company managed by voice actors. Jones expressed commitment to ethical AI development, ensuring that artists maintain control and receive compensation for their contributions. Skepticism surrounding AI persists among voice actors, with prominent figures voicing concerns about its potential to undermine their identities.
While the UK actors’ union, Equity, hasn’t initiated a similar strike, it supports SAGAFTRA in these efforts, constrained by local industrial relations legislation.
