Former Manchester United captain Roy Keane has delivered a scathing critique of goalkeeper Altay Bayindir’s performance during United’s recent Premier League loss to Arsenal. The Gunners claimed an early advantage thanks to Riccardo Calafiori’s header, leaving United fans and experts questioning the defending and goalkeeping during the pivotal moment.
Arsenal’s Set-Piece Success and Manchester United’s Struggles
The opening goal stemmed from a well-placed corner by England international Declan Rice. The delivery bypassed the United defensive line, finding Calafiori at the back post. Although Bayindir managed to get a slight touch on the cross, it wasn’t enough to divert the ball, allowing Arsenal’s attack to capitalize.
Bayindir and his defenders immediately appealed for a foul on the goalkeeper, citing potential interference. However, referee Simon Hooper dismissed their protests, and the goal stood. Commenting on the incident, analyst and former Manchester United player Gary Neville emphasized the importance of a stronger goalkeeping presence in such situations.
Gary Neville and Roy Keane Weigh In
Speaking on Sky Sports, Neville critiqued Bayindir’s decision-making: “The goalkeeper has to be stronger. There’s always pushing and shoving in the box, but you need to command that area. It’s a sensational delivery, but Altay has to take control. The goal will hurt United, especially when basic defensive errors are avoidable.”
At half-time, Roy Keane echoed similar sentiments. Known for his no-nonsense approach, Keane highlighted the need for greater authority in the six-yard box. “Fair play to Arsenal for the delivery, but if you’re the goalkeeper, own that space. Be aggressive, take control with confidence and even violence if necessary. United are simply too soft in these situations,” said Keane during his analysis.
Manchester United Faces Growing Concerns
This defensive lapse has added to growing concerns surrounding Manchester United’s form and cohesion under manager Erik ten Hag. With key battles ahead in both the league and Europe, fans and pundits alike are eager to see how the Red Devils will address these ongoing issues.
