Fred Beckley, a former RAF corporal and devoted collector, amassed an extraordinary collection of beer mats showcasing RAF badges during his lifetime. Following his passing, his family discovered this remarkable collection and are now searching for a public venue to display it.
Mr. Beckley served in the RAF for many years, with postings in Britain as well as overseas in locations such as Burma and Egypt. His beer mat collection, which holds symbolic and historical value, features unique designs linked to his service in the military. The collection has now been lovingly framed by his daughter, Hazel Newell.
Mrs. Newell, who resides in Kidlington, shared her hopes for the collection, saying, “I have contacted museums and auctioneers, but they are not interested. I think it is impressive and I would like it to be seen by everyone.” She believes the collection deserves to be showcased to honor her father’s memory and commemorate his RAF service.
Currently, Mrs. Newell is appealing to anyone who can provide a suitable location to publicly display the framed beer mats. If you are able to assist, please write to Memory Lane, Oxford Mail, 1 King’s Meadow, Ferry Hinksey Road, Osney Mead, Oxford OX2 0DP.
This story highlights the importance of preserving and celebrating personal and historical artifacts. Such collections not only serve as a testament to individual lives but also connect communities to their shared history.
If a venue is found, this one-of-a-kind collection will undoubtedly draw interest from history enthusiasts, RAF aficionados, and the general public alike. Stay updated as we follow the efforts to find a fitting home for this cherished tribute.
