Pensioners to Benefit from £9.5m Digital Inclusion Plan
State pensioners in the UK will soon gain access to free laptops and phones through a newly introduced £9.5 million Digital Inclusion Innovation Fund. This initiative, under the Labour government’s Plan for Change, aims to tackle digital exclusion and ensure that millions of people can reap the benefits of technology.
According to the Department for Science, Innovation, and Technology (DSIT), digital exclusion prevents countless individuals from reaching their full potential. The new program is intended to equip pensioners, particularly those born before 1959, with the tools necessary for digital connectivity.
Devices to Be Distributed by Local Authorities
The scheme will provide phones and laptops to those less likely to use the internet, such as older and digitally excluded individuals. Local councils and authorities will oversee the distribution of these complimentary gadgets, making access as seamless as possible across the UK.
The DSIT has confirmed that funding from the initiative will be allocated based on merit and geographical balance, covering all nine regions of England.
Labour Party Champions Digital Access
Labour Party Telecoms Minister Sir Chris Bryant expressed his commitment to reducing digital barriers, saying: “It is unacceptable that in 2025, millions of people across the UK simply can’t access the vast opportunities that technology and the online world offer.”
He continued, “Digital inclusion is essential for modern life and work, not just something that’s nice to have. It could help a young person successfully apply for a job or enable a sick patient to consult a GP remotely.”
This program builds on the government’s Digital Inclusion Action Plan, which already includes a device donation pilot initiative. As part of this pilot, re-purposed laptops from Whitehall will be redistributed to individuals in need.
Targeting the Most Vulnerable
Older individuals, disabled people, low-income households, and jobseekers are among those identified as being most at risk of digital exclusion. This new initiative reflects the government’s broader mission to bridge the digital divide and digitally empower communities.
The Digital Inclusion Innovation Fund is expected to bring transformative opportunities to countless individuals, improving day-to-day life and enabling meaningful connections online in an increasingly digital world.
