OpenAI is reportedly preparing to launch its latest artificial intelligence (AI) model, GPT-5, in August. The model will come in three variants – base, nano, and mini – signaling the end of the o-series model. This move will merge both the GPT and o-series into a single model with native reasoning capabilities.
GPT-5 to Feature Built-In Reasoning Mode
Rumors surrounding the GPT-5 model emerged last year, initially mistaken for the Orion codenamed model, which was later revealed to be GPT-4.5 released in February. OpenAI CEO, Sam Altman, outlined a roadmap for GPT-5, stating it as the last non-chain-of-thought (CoT) model. Future GPT models will inherently know when to engage in extensive thinking.
Altman mentioned that users on ChatGPT’s free tier will have limitless access to GPT-5 with standard intelligence, while Plus and Pro subscribers will access a higher level of intelligence. The model will provide access to all OpenAI tools such as voice, Canvas, Search, and Deep Research.
Despite the anticipation, OpenAI had not disclosed the exact release date for GPT-5 until recently. Alexander Wei from OpenAI hinted at an imminent release in a recent post, stating that they are introducing GPT-5 shortly. The Verge suggested that the release might happen as early as next month.
Unverified sources familiar with OpenAI’s strategy revealed that GPT-5 will launch following the open-source model releases, offering nano and mini variants. The base and mini models will be accessible through both ChatGPT and API, while the nano variant will be exclusively available via API.
