OpenAI is reportedly preparing to introduce its latest artificial intelligence model, GPT-5, in August. The model will come in three variations: the base, nano, and mini models. While details about the San Francisco-based firm’s flagship model are scarce, it is anticipated that GPT-5 will signal the conclusion of the o-series era.
GPT-5 is expected to feature a built-in reasoning mode, offering a significant advancement in AI technology. Speculations about the model started circulating last year, initially linked to the large language model under the codename Orion. However, it was later clarified that Orion was designated for GPT-4.5, which was released in February.
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman outlined the roadmap for GPT-5, declaring it the final non-Chain-of-Thought (CoT) model. He emphasized that all forthcoming GPT-series versions would possess the capability for native reasoning, understanding when to engage in prolonged thought processes effectively.
Altman indicated that users on the ChatGPT free tier would have access to GPT-5 at standard intelligence levels, while Plus and Pro subscribers would gain access to higher intelligence capabilities. Moreover, GPT-5 is set to incorporate various OpenAI tools, encompassing voice commands, Canvas, Search, Deep Research, and more.
Despite the initial announcement, specific details regarding the GPT-5 release date remained undisclosed. Recent comments from OpenAI’s Member of Technical Staff, Alexander Wei, hinted at an imminent release. The Verge suggested that the launch might take place as early as the upcoming month.
Insider sources hinted that GPT-5 would be unveiled following the introduction of planned open-source models. The model is projected to offer nano and mini variants, with the base and mini models accessible via ChatGPT and API, while the nano version would only be available through the API service.
