In a remarkable story of resilience and determination, a 36-year-old man from China has turned his life around through a grueling fitness challenge inspired by the popular Japanese anime series, One Punch Man. Li Shuangyong, whose journey began in August 2021, followed the routine of 100 push-ups, 100 sit-ups, 100 squats, and a 10-kilometer run daily over the course of 1,000 days.
Inspired by Anime: A Journey of Transformation
The fitness challenge recreates the training regimen of Saitama, the protagonist of the manga series One Punch Man. Saitama’s character transforms into a superhero with astonishing strength through relentless dedication to the same workout. For Mr. Shuangyong, the challenge wasn’t just physical—it was also a way to overcome personal struggles. After his fish farming business collapsed, leaving him in debt and separated from his wife, he found inspiration in the anime’s story of perseverance.
“I had to save myself. I could not keep living like that. It could not get any worse,” he told Jiupai News. Shuangyong’s goal was to “amplify hope without limits.”
From Humble Beginnings to Social Media Success
Armed with little more than determination and running shoes costing just £1.10, Shuangyong fueled his workouts with a diet of eggs and instant noodles. Over time, he began documenting his progress through daily training videos shared on social media, gaining a loyal following in China and beyond. Fans from Taiwan joined him virtually on live-streamed runs, and his growing popularity attracted sponsors who sent him new running shoes and supplements to aid his journey.
By the time he completed the challenge on July 19, 2025, Shuangyong had run more than 20,000 kilometers and completed hundreds of thousands of push-ups, sit-ups, and squats. He celebrated his incredible transformation by shaving his head and dressing as Saitama in a tribute to the anime hero. Even the creator of One Punch Man took notice, praising him: “Your willpower is incredible! Congratulations.”
Aiming for the Next Big Goal
Now, Shuangyong has shifted his focus to achieving a Guinness World Record. His ambitious new goal? Running a marathon every day for an entire year. This next phase of his journey promises to inspire countless others just as his One Punch Man-inspired workouts have.
