Namaste Care, an innovative, sensory-led therapy, is revolutionizing the lives of dementia patients at the Bridge House Care Home in Abingdon. This holistic approach emphasizes connection, relaxation, and person-centered care, creating meaningful improvements in residents’ wellbeing.
What is Namaste Care?
Namaste Care combines a variety of therapeutic elements such as aromatherapy, soothing hand massages, and sensory-focused techniques involving lighting and sound. Sessions are conducted either one-on-one or in small groups, fostering a personalized and calming environment for participants. Since its implementation earlier this year, the therapy has led to visible improvements in residents’ mood, behavior, and overall quality of life.
Enhancing Resident Wellbeing
Chantelle Merritt, Lifestyle and Riverly Club Manager at Bridge House, explained the transformative impact of Namaste Care: “It has allowed us to connect with residents on a deeper, more personal level through simple acts like a comforting touch or a shared moment of peace.”
Residents and family members alike have praised the program’s effects. Gwyneth Bolton, 90, shared, “I feel complete peace when I’m here; everything feels better.” Other residents, including dementia patient Glyneth Randall, 81, have also shown improvements, becoming more talkative, engaged, and noticeably relaxed during these sessions.
Safety and Dignity through Specialized Care
Bridge House reports a significant decline in falls among residents since starting Namaste Care, attributed to the calming atmosphere and reduction in restlessness and anxiety among participants. Marta Leszko, Home Manager at Bridge House, noted, “The therapy sessions create an emotionally settled environment, reducing unsafe movement and associated fall risks.”
The care home has also empowered its dedicated staff by training them as Namaste Champions, ensuring all residents—regardless of their health needs—can benefit from this therapy. Ms. Leszko emphasized, “Our approach prioritizes high-quality, person-centered care, respecting each individual’s dignity and wellbeing through empathy, respect, and purpose.”
Unwavering Commitment to Resident Health
With a mission-driven focus on enhancing the lives of its residents, the team at Bridge House continues to lead by example in delivering compassionate care. Family members like Margaret Young, whose husband Brian resides at the home, expressed their gratitude: “Namaste helps to calm Brian. He enjoys the softly lit room, the soothing sounds of rainfall, and birds chirping.”
Bridge House’s innovative use of Namaste Care exemplifies its dedication to improving the lives of its residents through empathy, creativity, and evidence-based practices. This sensory-led approach is not only a blessing for residents but also a testament to the power of holistic care in dementia treatment.
