PC Andrew Doran, a former officer with Cheshire Police who appeared on the Channel 5 series Motorway Cops: Catching Britain’s Speeders, has been banned from serving in the police after it emerged he sent, received, and retained offensive text messages on his personal mobile phone.
Offensive Content Leads to Ban
The misconduct hearing revealed that between 2015 and 2018, Doran exchanged over 20 troubling messages, including sexist, racist, and discriminatory material. It was also disclosed that he failed to delete, challenge, or report these messages, including one depicting extreme pornography — a criminal offense to possess. Chief Constable Mark Roberts of Cheshire Police described his conduct as a serious breach of professional standards, stating that Doran demonstrated a “clear lack of integrity” that discredits the police force and jeopardizes public trust.
Accelerated Misconduct Proceedings
PC Doran resigned from the force in July 2025 before his scheduled accelerated misconduct hearing. This legal process, reserved for cases with undeniable evidence of gross misconduct, ensures swift dismissal when it is in the public’s interest. While the ex-constable had already stepped down, the hearing officially placed him on the banned list, preventing him from returning to the police force.
During the hearing, Chief Constable Roberts emphasized that Doran’s actions, particularly his failure to act on receiving illegal content, were “inexcusable” and contrary to the values upheld by Cheshire Police. He affirmed, “A lesser sanction than dismissal would not uphold the high standards expected in policing or serve as a deterrent to others.”
Role on Channel 5’s Motorway Cops
PC Doran gained public attention through his prominent appearances on the documentary series Motorway Cops: Catching Britain’s Speeders, which has aired since 2021. The series chronicles the dangerous work of policing Britain’s busiest roads, and Doran featured in several episodes dedicated to his operations. His actions on the show ranged from pursuing car thieves and apprehending speeding drivers to aiding motorists after accidents. A memorable scene even showed him chasing a suspect driving a tractor.
The series initially highlighted Cheshire Police, Doran’s former force, before transitioning to Northumbria Police in later seasons and Humberside Police in the most recent episodes.
Impact on Public Trust
Despite his previous positive contributions highlighted on television, news of PC Doran’s misconduct has caused significant backlash. Chief Constable Roberts reiterated that such behavior has no place in policing: “The messages were offensive, improper, and discriminatory. They are totally unacceptable within Cheshire Police or any police service.”
Cheshire Police confirmed that they will continue to uphold the highest standards of conduct to ensure public trust and confidence in law enforcement remains intact.
