Meta, the parent company of Facebook, will stop political ad sales and displays in the EU starting October to comply with the Transparency and Targeting of Political Advertising (TTPA) legislation. Meta raises concerns about the law’s complexity and impact on personalized advertising.
Facebook’s parent company Meta announces its decision to cease selling and displaying political ads in the EU, citing the challenges posed by the incoming TTPA regulations.
The TTPA introduces additional obligations causing complexity and legal uncertainties for advertisers and platforms in the EU.
Meta warns that the TTPA’s restrictions on ad targeting will limit political and social issue advertisers’ ability to reach their audiences, resulting in less relevant ads for users.
The European Commission introduced the TTPA in 2024 to enforce transparency in political ads, requiring clear labelling, sponsor disclosure, and valid consent for data usage.
Google has also decided to stop selling political ads in the EU due to the operational challenges imposed by the new law.
