Iconic actor Mark Hamill, best known for his role as Luke Skywalker in the Star Wars franchise, recently admitted that he once considered leaving the United States following the election of former President Donald Trump. In an interview with The Times, the 73-year-old actor revealed that he contemplated relocating to Europe, with England and Ireland being his top choices, leaving the final decision to his wife, Marilou York.
‘I’m Not Leaving,’ Thanks to Marilou York
Hamill described how his wife’s perspective changed his mind. Recalling their conversation, he shared, “She didn’t respond right away but a week later she said, ‘I’m surprised you would allow him to force you out of your own country.’ That son of a b*tch, I thought. I’m not leaving.”
Although frustrated with the political climate, Hamill credits York with helping him see things differently and ultimately stay in the U.S. He remains optimistic about the integrity of Americans, stating, “I still believe there are more honest, decent people than there are the MAGA crowd. If I didn’t, I’d move back to England.”
Hamill’s Views on Politics Today
The BAFTA-winning actor continues to be outspoken about politics. However, he has taken a step back from major platforms like Facebook and Twitter, opting for BlueSky instead. Reflecting on the state of politics, Hamill said, “The only way I can deal with it without going crazy… is to look at it like a thick, sprawling political novel.”
Hamill also criticized several controversial policies, saying, “Our status in the world has been crippled, and that will reverberate for decades. Making Canada a 51st state? Do you know how offensive that is? And then taking over Greenland and renaming the Gulf of Mexico. The distractions are hilarious.”
Other Celebrities Eye Moves Abroad
Hamill is not the only celebrity to consider leaving the U.S. due to political concerns. Angelina Jolie is reportedly preparing to sell her Los Angeles estate to relocate abroad once her youngest children turn 18 in July 2026. According to sources, she has been eyeing several locations for her next move.
Similarly, comedian Rosie O’Donnell has already moved to Ireland with her youngest child, who is non-binary and has autism. O’Donnell told People, “It was something I needed to do for myself and for my child, and for my own sanity.”
Ellen DeGeneres and her wife Portia de Rossi have also permanently relocated to England. They expressed concerns about the potential rollback of same-sex marriage rights in the U.S., with DeGeneres stating, “Portia and I are already looking into it, and if they do that, we’re going to get married here,” according to the BBC.
Record Number of Americans Seeking British Citizenship
Hamill’s sentiments reflect a broader trend, as CNN reports a record-breaking number of Americans applying for British citizenship in early 2025. However, many are finding such moves financially and logistically difficult despite political frustrations.
Mark Hamill’s candid remarks about his internal debate and decision to remain in the U.S. have sparked conversations among fans about the intersection of politics and personal decisions. His optimism and resilience continue to be an inspiration for many.
