Manchester United’s opening Premier League game of the 2025/26 season against Arsenal may have ended in disappointment, but there were promising signs for the team under head coach Ruben Amorim.
Encouraging Performances from New Signings
Despite the 1-0 loss at Old Trafford, new signings Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo showed glimpses of the creativity and energy they bring to the squad. Amorim’s men put up a commendable fight against one of the league’s top contenders, offering fans a sense of optimism for the season ahead.
United’s performance outshone Arsenal in several key metrics. The team had a higher Expected Goals (XG) score of 1.59 compared to Arsenal’s 1.05, enjoyed 61.2% possession, and registered 22 shots compared to Arsenal’s more modest tally. The inability to convert these opportunities into goals, however, proved to be United’s Achilles’ heel.
Ruben Amorim’s Tactical Influence
Under Amorim’s guidance, United’s organization and pressing game have visibly improved after a full pre-season. The team’s progressive approach suggests that they are on the right path despite the setback. Amorim now focuses on ensuring these positive performances translate into consistent results, especially in the games ahead against Fulham and Burnley.
Addressing Key Issues
While there is hope that the partnership of Cunha and Mbeumo will provide enough creativity to feed forward Benjamin Sesko, there are still areas demanding urgent attention. Goalkeeper Altay Bayindir’s error against Arsenal highlighted ongoing concerns in the goalkeeping department. With Andre Onana and Tom Heaton also struggling to provide stability, the position remains a critical challenge for Amorim.
The midfield also requires reinforcement. Manuel Ugarte’s struggles during his cameo appearance underscored the lack of depth and adaptability in this area. With time running out before the transfer window closes, strengthening the squad will be paramount to meeting United’s ambitions this season.
A Season of High Expectations
Manchester United faces immense pressure to secure a European qualification spot this season. With winnable fixtures on the horizon, Amorim will hope his team can find the clinical edge needed to deliver results. The early signs from the new-look squad are encouraging, but execution on the pitch will ultimately determine their success.
