A chilling incident has left a community in shock after Mark Anthony Kirby, a 34-year-old father from Prescot, Merseyside, tragically passed away. The suspected cause? A bite from one of his recently purchased pet spiders. The uncommon arachnid obsession developed mere weeks before his unfortunate death.
The Journey from Arachnophobia to Spider Ownership
Mark, once terrified of insects, had undergone a drastic shift, growing fascinated with spiders. According to his former partner of 16 years, Kayleigh Gill, he had bought five venomous spiders online. Despite their separation, Kayleigh described Mark as a “funny, caring, and outgoing” man who was deeply devoted to their two children.
“He was terrified of insects when we were together,” Kayleigh said, adding, “I think he might have bought them because he lived alone. But he put our children first, always.”
The Liverpool Echo reported that shortly after acquiring the spiders, Mark began complaining of flu-like symptoms, including fever, aching limbs, and a fluctuating temperature. Tragically, on August 2, he called his sister Kath, struggling to breathe. Moments before collapsing, paramedics were called but were unable to revive him.
Illness Linked to Spider Bite?
Kayleigh revealed that although the official post-mortem report remains inconclusive, the circumstances strongly suggest that a spider bite may have played a role. She added that Mark admitted to being bitten but opted not to seek medical attention, despite her urging.
The tragedy highlights concerns about regulations surrounding exotic pet ownership. Kayleigh emphasized the importance of requiring licenses for keeping venomous spiders, stating, “It shouldn’t be so easy to buy potentially dangerous animals online.”
Remembering a Devoted Father
Mark leaves behind two children, 18-year-old son Nathan-Mark and 17-year-old daughter Kimmy-Louise. Kayleigh fondly recalled him as “the life and soul of the party” and a devoted father. His untimely death has left the family heartbroken.
This tragic event is a somber reminder of the risks associated with exotic pet ownership. As investigations continue, Mark’s story underlines the importance of responsible pet-keeping and awareness of potential dangers.
