More than 180 Gazan children and adults have been brought to Italy since the start of Israel’s war on Gaza. A Gazan woman identified as Marah Abu Zuhri, severely emaciated, was flown to Italy but died in hospital. The 20-year-old suffered a cardiac arrest and had a complex clinical picture, including severe malnutrition. Israeli authorities stated she had leukaemia, emphasizing their support for medical transfers of patients.
Reports indicate the UN’s warning of widespread malnutrition in Gaza. Italy received 31 patients with serious conditions this week, with British MPs calling for evacuation of sick children from Gaza to the UK. Gaza City residents are to be provided with tents before relocation to safe zones, amidst ongoing conflict.
Israel’s denial of malnutrition in Gaza contrasts with UN reports and humanitarian concerns. The Israeli government attributes the crisis to Hamas and states its military aims to target terrorists rather than civilians. The conflict has resulted in numerous deaths and significant destruction in Gaza City, including in the Zeitoun neighbourhood.
