
The Maldives recently inaugurated the upgraded Velana International Airport, a significant project supported by the Abu Dhabi Fund for Development (ADFD) and other regional partners, aimed at increasing its capacity to over 7 million passengers annually. This development comes after the opening of Maafaru International Airport, collectively boosting the nation’s connectivity and tourism sector growth. The ongoing commitment of ADFD towards sustainable development and economic progress in the Maldives is showcased through these transformative projects.
The collaboration between the Republic of Maldives and the United Arab Emirates marks another milestone in their partnership focused on sustainable development and infrastructure enhancement. Over the past four decades, the cooperation facilitated by ADFD has successfully implemented critical projects spanning various sectors such as tourism, energy, transportation, and healthcare.
The recent inauguration of Maafaru International Airport and Velana International Airport represents a combined AED 1.11 billion investment (approx. USD 302 million), illustrating not only infrastructural upgrades but strategic interventions to enhance connectivity, drive economic activities, and position the Maldives as a prominent global hub.
