An affluent couple’s journey to building their dream home has spiraled into a £3 million legal battle, as Lisa and Tim Klaver take North Downs Construction to London’s High Court. The couple alleges that their new luxury property near Farnham, Surrey, was constructed so poorly that it is now deemed uninhabitable, requiring demolition.
Legal Battle Unfolds
Lisa Klaver, the founder of Lightbox Wealth and former high-profile investment advisor, and her husband Tim are seeking more than £3 million in damages for the alleged negligence of North Downs Construction. The couple claims 69 defects were discovered within the property, including structural and aesthetic flaws such as issues with timber cladding, terrace stabilization, balcony integrity, and the lower ground floor roof. Other reported problems include substandard external walls, improperly installed windows and doors, and errors in the structural steelwork.
The Cost of Repairs or Demolition
The Klavers assert that their dream home, complete with sprawling designs, is beyond repair. According to their lawsuit, alternative contractors have advised them that only demolishing the house and rebuilding from scratch would meet living standards. This option is estimated to cost the couple £3.4 million. While retaining the foundations and lower ground floor could reduce the cost slightly to £2.9 million, the Klavers believe this approach is unfeasible.
Timeline of Disappointment
Construction started in July 2021, with the plan to demolish a pre-existing structure once the new home was ready. The Klavers moved into their home in May 2022, only to discover a cascade of issues flagged by their architect after their move. By this point, the couple had already paid £836,000 toward the construction project.
In July 2022, the Klavers withheld payment for an invoice after discovering a defect in the exterior timber cladding. Following months of disputes, North Downs Construction ceased work on the property. By April 2024, the Klavers terminated the contract, alleging that the builders failed to take sufficient corrective action and did not complete the project within the agreed 50-week timeline or request an extension.
A Gloomy Outlook
The couple also accuses North Downs Construction of failing to ensure the property was watertight, as it experienced rain and flood damage during late 2022. Although some defects were acknowledged by the builders—who provided proposals for fixing certain problems—many critical issues, including those affecting structural steelwork, allegedly remain unaddressed. The Klavers insist it is not their responsibility to redesign the house to accommodate remedial work.
A Career Turned Upside Down
Mrs. Klaver, previously a senior executive at Citi Private Bank leading investment services for ultra-high net worth individuals in Singapore, has now pivoted to running her consultancy firm, Lightbox Wealth, alongside her husband Tim. Despite their extensive professional backgrounds, the couple has been left in limbo, unable to secure a mortgage or sell the defective property.
The Klavers declined to comment publicly on their ongoing case. North Downs Construction has also refrained from offering a statement but is expected to defend the claim in court. As the lawsuit continues, it highlights the growing concerns over accountability and quality standards within high-end construction projects.
What’s Next?
This case reflects the risks of substandard construction even in luxury developments, underscoring the importance of due diligence and written guarantees when entrusting builders with multimillion-pound projects. The court proceedings will determine whether the Klavers can secure reimbursement for their damages and the emotional toll of their ordeal.
