Delhi’s air quality has deteriorated drastically as winter progresses, mostly due to pollution from various sources. Luke Coutinho, known for his work in nutritional science and alternative medicine, suggests a natural method for addressing respiratory issues caused by such conditions.
Coutinho shared on Instagram about Kalmegh – a traditional medicinal herb regarded as Andrographis paniculata in scientific terms – widely used in Ayurvedic and other traditional medicine systems. He described its numerous benefits, such as its anti-inflammatory and mucolytic effects – which can help reduce inflammation in the respiratory tract and thin out mucus, respectively, and its immune-boosting qualities due to active compounds like andrographolide. Kalmegh’s various antioxidants combat free radicals produced due to pollution, thereby neutralising oxidative stress, and regular consumption may help the body eliminate toxins accumulated from pollutant exposure.
Though Kalmegh can be consumed by boiling its leaves, or as a capsule, Coutinho advises consulting an alternative medicine registered doctor for the right method and dosage. Despite these benefits, he warns against using Kalmegh without professional advice, particularly for those with severe respiratory conditions, due to varied effects based on individual differences, incomplete research and potential misuse.
While a better environment is the ultimate solution, small steps such as leveraging the power of Kalmegh can contribute to improved respiratory health, especially amidst the ongoing pollution crisis. However, it’s crucial to be wise, informed, and consult professionals before adopting such treatments.
