King Charles III has officially settled into his annual visit at Balmoral Castle, his private Highland residence, where he was greeted on Monday by picturesque August sunshine. The 76-year-old monarch arrived with plans to host multiple family members in the coming weeks, continuing a cherished royal tradition.
An Unexpected Reunion with Cpl Cruachan IV
Among the welcoming party was none other than Cpl Cruachan IV, the famously cheeky Shetland pony who serves as the official mascot of the Royal Regiment of Scotland. Known for his playful antics, the 16-year-old pony once earned a mild scolding from the late Queen Elizabeth II for nibbling on her bouquet during a 2017 visit to Stirling Castle. However, during Monday’s ceremony, Cpl Cruachan IV showcased impeccable behavior, eliciting a warm moment as King Charles gently stroked his nose.
A Long-Standing Royal Tradition
Cpl Cruachan IV, who has represented the Royal Regiment of Scotland since October 2012, frequently appears at royal events and parades across Scotland. His presence at Balmoral Castle is a reflection of the deep connection the royal family shares with Scotland and its traditions.

As part of the ceremony, King Charles inspected the Balmoral guard of honor, represented by the Balaklava Company, 5th Battalion of the Royal Regiment of Scotland. The monarch was also greeted by the Lord Lieutenant of Aberdeenshire, as well as enthusiastic members of the public gathered outside the castle gates.
