Iga Swiatek, currently ranked World No. 3, showcased her dominance as she defeated Elena Rybakina 7-5, 6-3 to secure her spot in her first-ever Cincinnati Open final. The match, lasting 98 minutes, highlighted Swiatek’s resilience and adaptability, particularly after overcoming an early setback in the first set.
Swiatek’s Winning Strategy
Despite a strong start from Rybakina, Swiatek capitalized on a sudden dip in her opponent’s form, winning four consecutive games to clinch the first set. Swiatek commented, “That was a tough match. At the beginning, the level was pretty crazy. We played so fast that sometimes we couldn’t even run to the second ball. But I was there to play with intensity and good quality, and I am super happy with the performance. I served much better, so for sure it helped, and I wouldn’t change anything.”
Comeback in the First Set
Rybakina, seeded ninth, demonstrated early dominance with a cross-court forehand winner that secured a break, allowing her to lead 5-3. However, a determined Swiatek fought back, breaking Rybakina’s serve and leveling the score at 5-5. Swiatek held serve and then broke Rybakina again to seal the first set.
Second Set Victory
Swiatek carried her momentum into the second set, breaking Rybakina early for a 3-1 lead. Despite some resistance, Swiatek defended crucial points, including saving a 15-40 deficit, to maintain her advantage. She ultimately secured the match when Rybakina’s forehand return went long, marking another straight-sets victory for the Polish star.
Looking Ahead to the Final
Swiatek remains undefeated in sets throughout the Cincinnati Open, setting the stage for a highly anticipated final against either Jasmine Paolini or Veronika Kudermetova. Swiatek expressed her focus on maintaining her performance, stating, “Anyone who is going to be in the final will be super tough. I will just focus on myself and try to continue the work that I’ve been doing. I feel I have progressed at this tournament.”
The final presents Swiatek with an opportunity to claim her second title in her last three tournaments and build momentum heading into the US Open. With a dominant record against both potential finalists (5-0 against Paolini and 4-1 against Kudermetova), Swiatek is the clear favorite to take home the title.
