The UK supermarket chain Iceland has launched a controversial initiative to combat shoplifting by offering customers a £1 reward for reporting shoplifters. According to Richard Walker, the executive chairman of Iceland, shoppers who catch offenders in the act and report them to store staff will have the reward credited to their membership card.

Shoplifting has become a significant issue for Iceland, costing the company an estimated £20 million annually. Mr. Walker explained that these losses impact the business’s ability to lower prices for customers and provide better wages for employees. “Some people see this as a victimless crime; it is not,” he stated. “It’s a cost to the hours we pay our colleagues, as well as it being about intimidation and violence.”

The initiative, however, has sparked a wave of mixed reactions.
