Recent research suggests that lifestyle factors such as drinking and smoking may contribute to the increased severity of obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA). The study found that the condition worsens over weekends, termed ‘social apnoea,’ possibly due to increased alcohol consumption and smoking habits during the weekend. Additionally, irregular sleep patterns and reduced CPAP machine usage on weekends could exacerbate OSA risks. Individuals with OSA face health implications like stroke, high blood pressure, and sleepiness-related driving hazards. The importance of managing lifestyle factors and consistent treatment for OSA is highlighted.
