Shopkeepers are advised to employ ‘greeters’ to deter shoplifting, according to Lancashire Constabulary. The police force highlighted a surge in thefts across England and Wales, emphasizing the importance of deterrence.
The total number of thefts reached 530,643 in the year leading up to March, with retailers facing an estimated cost of £1.8bn. Despite significant arrests, thieves often go unpunished, prompting the need for effective deterrence measures.
Encouraging Shop Security
Lancashire Police initiated Operation Vulture, promoting the use of ‘customer greeters’ as a preventive measure to combat crime. By welcoming genuine customers, store owners not only enhance the shopping experience but also discourage potential shoplifters.
According to the force’s online guide ‘How to Deter a Shoplifter,’ offenders are less likely to commit theft if they feel observed by staff. The presence of ‘customer greeters’ can significantly reduce the incidence of shoplifting.
Identifying Suspicious Behavior
The guidance suggests that shopworkers should offer assistance to customers displaying suspicious behavior. Installing warning signs and reminding potential thieves of police intervention can serve as effective deterrents.
Shoplifters may not fit the stereotype portrayed in media, as they can blend in and act inconspicuously. Signs such as nervousness, constant surveillance of surroundings, and inappropriate clothing choices may indicate potential theft.
Handling Suspected Theft
Store personnel witnessing theft should approach suspects in a calm manner and request the return of items discreetly. Ensuring safety is paramount, and intervention should only occur when deemed secure.
In acknowledgment of societal challenges, the advice emphasizes addressing root causes of criminal behavior while ensuring appropriate consequences for offenders.
Preventing Opportunistic Theft
Policing minister Dame Diana Johnson cautioned against displaying high-theft items prominently in stores. Items like alcohol placed at the front can attract thieves seeking easy targets for resale.
Contrary to suggestions of public intervention, officials underscore the role of law enforcement in deterring and addressing criminal activities. Efforts are underway to develop advanced AI systems for predictive crime mapping.
The Government’s upcoming £4million initiative aims to leverage real-time data for crime prediction and prevention, akin to the concept showcased in ‘Minority Report.’
