Delhi’s air quality has hit an all-time low as winter sets in, with pollution from garbage waste, road dust, factories, power plants, and vehicular emissions being major contributors. In response, holistic lifestyle coach and nutritionist Luke Coutinho has recommended an Ayurvedic remedy to help combat respiratory issues exacerbated by the pollution.
According to Coutinho, Kalmegh (scientifically known as Andrographis paniculata) has been traditionally used in Ayurvedic and other traditional medicine systems, boasting potential health benefits. These include anti-inflammatory effects, the thinning of mucus in the respiratory system, immune system support, prevention of oxidative stress, elimination of toxins, and protection against hypersensitivity. All these attributes may offer relief in conditions like respiratory infections, asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), and bronchitis.
While Kalmegh can be consumed by boiling its leaves, Coutinho advises against self-prescription, urging individuals to consult with healthcare professionals, particularly those suffering from severe respiratory conditions. He also mentions possible contraindications and incomplete research on many herbs and supplements, underscoring the need to speak to medical and Ayurveda experts, especially if currently undergoing treatment. Despite these precautions, he still advocates using Kalmegh judiciously as a supplementary measure to help the human body and lungs cope with the current pollution levels in the safest possible way.
