Cory Rodriguez, a health influencer popularly known on social media as Health WithCory, recently shared valuable insights on food storage on TikTok. In a viral video, Rodriguez expounds on common food items that people often keep inappropriately.
According to Rodriguez, honey doesn’t belong in the fridge as cool temperatures can make it crystallise. Similarly, tomatoes, which most people refrigerate, should instead be stored at room temperature to prevent them from becoming mealy. Additionally, the health expert discouraged keeping coffee in the fridge as it can absorb odours and scents from other food items. He advised storing coffee away from moisture or humidity.
Another item that’s frequently but unnecessarily refrigerated is hot sauce. Rodriguez noted that its vinegar content prevents bacterial growth, so it’s safe to leave out at room temperature, plus warmer peppers offer a stronger flavour. Potatoes should also be kept in a cool, dark place, not the fridge as this can degrade their starches and affect their taste. And for onions and garlic, they should remain out of the fridge, as that’s how they’re bought.
However, Rodriguez mentioned that storage practices depend on the local climate and home temperatures. The video generated various reactions, with some viewers expressing surprise at the recommendations, including refrigerating coffee.
