The government has taken significant action against 25 apps and websites for publishing obscene content. Under the Information Technology Act, 2000, apps like AltBalaji, Big Shots, and Ullu have faced repercussions for allegedly displaying indecent representation of women.
This move follows an advisory from the Ministry of Information & Broadcasting to OTT and social media platforms in January warning against the presence of obscene content.
AltBalaji, Ullu, and More Apps Banned
According to reports, these platforms have violated various laws, including Section 67 and Section 67A of the IT Act, 2000, Section 294 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023, and Section 4 of The Indecent Representation of Women (Prohibition) Act, 1986.
Notably, Section 67 of the IT Act prohibits the publication or transmission of obscene material in electronic form.
The government’s objective is to restrict the accessibility of obscene content online, particularly to minors. It aims to ensure that digital content complies with decency standards and legal regulations.
