Earlier this month, Google announced the launch of the Android Canary release channel, replacing the existing Android Developer Previews. The latest update, Android Canary 2507, is designed for developers interested in testing new Android APIs. Initially available on Pixel phones including the Pixel 9 series and Pixel 9a, this release brings significant enhancements.
Android Canary 2507 Update: Compatible Devices
In a recent Reddit forum post, Google disclosed that the Android Canary 2507 update includes an updated SDK (Software Development Kit) and system images tailored for several Pixel devices:
- Google Pixel 9 Series
- Google Pixel 9a
- Google Pixel 8 Series
- Google Pixel Tablet
- Google Pixel Fold
- Google Pixel 7 Series
- Google Pixel 6 Series
Before proceeding with the update installation, Google urges caution, emphasizing that Canary builds are experimental and not intended for general use. These releases contain features in active development and testing phases, potentially carrying bugs.
Despite internal testing, Android Canary releases may exhibit issues affecting normal device operation. If intrigued by the experimental features, Google recommends trial on a secondary device instead of the primary handset.
New Features
Reports from Android Authority highlight that the Android Canary 2507 release adds support for graphical Linux apps. Facilitated through the Linux Terminal app, Android users can now initiate the Debian operating system within a virtual machine. Post-installation of the latest Canary build, graphical app support is enabled.
Additionally, the update introduces an expanded dark mode, compelling dark mode in apps lacking native support through a new Expanded option detectable within theme settings on Pixel. This feature mirrors the override force-dark option present in Developer Options on Android.
