Seeing double has never been more entertaining as celebrity doppelganger contests become a wildly popular internet craze across the globe. Contests were recently held in London and Dublin, gathering crowds for Harry Styles and Paul Mescal lookalikes respectively. The initiator of the Styles lookalike challenge was reporter Katrina Mirpuri, with a turnout of a crowd over 100 strong, and a dozen lookalikes of the Grammy-awarded singer entering the competition. The lucky winner walked away with a cash reward of £50.
The Dublin contest took place earlier, bringing together several Paul Mescal lookalikes, with the champion winning three pints, £20, and the ultimate bragging rights. The trend seemed to have originated in New York City, with a contest for Timothe Chalamet doubles. This event attracted a massive audience and even drew the attention of Chalamet himself, as well as a police response, and awarded all participants with $50 prizes.
Youtube influencer Anthony Po, creator of the Chalamet contest explained his motive to The Hollywood Reporter. He stated, ‘I am in a phase of trying to do public stunts… I believe it’s really amusing, and I feel that several creators at the moment aren’t really developing anything. Their focus is basically on commentary, hence the stunts to create buzz and free, entertaining content for people.’
As the trend gains momentum around the world, everyone is left asking ‘Which celebrity lookalike will be next?’
