Gary Neville Criticizes Manchester United’s Goalkeeping Concerns

Former Manchester United captain Gary Neville has voiced his concerns about the team’s continued struggles between the posts, stressing the need for a commanding presence in goal.
The Goalkeeping Issue at Manchester United
Altay Bayindir, deputizing for the injured Andre Onana, found himself at fault during the crucial moment of the match. Arsenal capitalized on a weak clearance, and Calafiori had an easy finish at the back post. This incident is not isolated — Bayindir has faced scrutiny for a series of mistakes last season, and Onana too has been inconsistent with high-profile errors in matches against Viktoria Plzen and Nottingham Forest.
Speaking on his Sky Sports podcast, Neville questioned the stability of the team’s goalkeeping situation. Reflecting on his years at Manchester United, Neville emphasized the importance of having a reliable and dominant goalkeeper like Peter Schmeichel or Edwin van der Sar. He said, “United need a No.1 who owns the six-yard box, commands the air, and saves matches with key moments.”
Potential Goalkeeping Solutions
Neville has highlighted two possible targets for Manchester United: Emi Martinez of Aston Villa and Gianluigi Donnarumma of Paris Saint-Germain. Both are known for their experience under pressure. Martinez, who was instrumental in Argentina’s World Cup 2022 victory, and Donnarumma, who excelled for Italy in the European Championship finals, are strong contenders.
Neville believes these players not only bring skill but also the leadership and personality required to thrive under the intense spotlight at Old Trafford.
Can United Afford Changes?
Despite spending nearly £200 million to revamp their attack, manager Ruben Amorim has limited financial flexibility due to Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR). While further tactical upgrades might be needed, the goalkeeping issue, according to Neville, cannot be overlooked.
However, Amorim defended Bayindir in a post-match press conference, citing physical challenges in the penalty area as a contributor to the goal. He stated, “Altay made the decision to go for the ball, but he chose to push rather than catch it. It’s an area he needs to work on.”
