Former Nine News Queensland News Director Amanda Paterson has spoken out regarding claims she improperly benefited from a staff discount at a designer fashion boutique after her abrupt dismissal from the network.
Denial of Allegations
Reports suggest that in May, six months following her sudden departure from Nine, Paterson received a 50% discount while shopping at high-end fashion retailer Carla Zampatti in Brisbane. Allegedly, Paterson and her two friends selected $4000 worth of garments, including a velvet suit and two jackets, before obtaining the discount. Despite these claims, Paterson firmly denies any wrongdoing.
According to the former news boss, the discount was offered unsolicited by a staff member who recognized her from a previous event. “I had never been to that store before,” she clarified. “The salesperson said they recognized me from a Carla Zampatti fashion parade where I attended at a Nine table, and then offered me the discount.” She emphasized that at no point did she claim to be currently working at Nine News.
Paterson even expressed regret at not knowing about the existence of a staff discount earlier. “I wish I had known that particular store offered discounts to Nine staff. I could have been saving money there for years,” she added.
Legacy at Nine News
Amanda Paterson’s exit from Nine News in November last year marked the end of a 30-year career marked by journalistic excellence and managerial contributions. Beginning as a 19-year-old reporter, Paterson emerged as one of Australia’s most notable investigative journalists, earning three Walkley Award nominations and multiple Queensland Media Awards.
She spearheaded numerous groundbreaking stories, covering medical malpractice, sports-related controversies, and even a murder confession that played a pivotal role in resolving a cold case. Additionally, her contributions as Queensland News Director were transformative, helping the bureau reach record ratings milestones while mentoring the next generation of journalists.
The Sudden Termination
Despite her accolades and achievements, Paterson’s tenure came to an abrupt end. She claimed that her dismissal had been delivered via a brief video call by the network’s national news director, Fiona Dear, after more than three decades of loyal service.
Her exit was met with criticism among industry insiders, given Nine News’ success in producing some of its strongest ratings in years under her leadership. Following her departure, her role was temporarily filled by Kate Donnison, with Brendan Hockings later taking over after returning from leave.
Community and Media Reactions
While the discount claims have caused a stir, Paterson has remained steadfast in addressing her accusers. She continues to stand by her story, maintaining that the transaction was aboveboard and free from any impropriety.
The controversy surrounding her exit and the subsequent allegations have sparked widespread discussion online, with many industry observers reflecting on Paterson’s contribution to Australian journalism and the often stringent nature of corporate media. As the story unfolds, Amanda Paterson’s legacy as a fearless journalist and industry leader remains in the spotlight.
