Ethereum is gearing up for its next major upgrade, ‘Fusaka,’ with developers confirming a mainnet activation date set for December 3, 2025. This update is a crucial step for the Ethereum network as it continues to evolve, prioritize scalability, and reduce costs for users.
What is the Fusaka Upgrade?
The Fusaka upgrade aims to improve Ethereum’s scalability by increasing blob capacity temporarily in a phased manner. A ‘blob’ refers to a packet of data used by rollups, a technology that bundles multiple transactions to optimize the network’s performance. This not only facilitates faster transaction processing but also ensures significantly lower fees for users.
Why is Fusaka Important?
The Fusaka upgrade follows May’s ‘Pectra’ release, which introduced user-friendly features, enhanced staking options, and expanded data capacity. However, industry experts highlighted the continued need for scalability improvements as network usage swells. Fusaka is designed to meet that demand by implementing incremental increases in blob capacity, a key component for rollup efficiency.
The phased approach allows the network to gradually adapt while minimizing the risk of potential overloads. Developers plan to first raise blob capacity to 10/15 blobs per block before eventually increasing it to 14/21 blobs as activity grows.
Testing and Rollout Schedule
To ensure a smooth transition, the Ethereum team has planned extensive testing to address issues seen during the Devnet-5 testing phase. Bugs in key software, such as the Prysm validator client and the ckzg library responsible for blob verification, have already been identified and resolved. The next testing stage, Devnet-6, will validate these fixes before upgrades are launched on public testnets and the main Ethereum network.
Shadow forks — replicas of the main network — will also be used in October to further simulate real-world conditions and prepare the network for a successful deployment. Despite the accelerated timeline, developers caution that unforeseen bugs or insufficient testing could still delay the rollout.
